Mr. Meerschaert earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Nevada, Reno, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Steven next completed his Master of Arts in Counseling at Oakland University and had a successful career in mental health, addiction treatment and hospital administration. From there, Steven went on to earn his Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law where he was a member of Law Review, served as Executive Director for Moot Court, and was President of both the Mental Health Association and the American Constitution Society. Steven won the 2023 Detroit Mercy Law Moot Court Junior Tournament, was named Top Oralist and Top American Competitor for the 2023 Transnational Law Moot, and was designated Top Oral Advocate at the 2022 G. Mennen Williams Oral Advocacy Tournament. Steven also is a published legal scholar, with his note titled “For the Greater Good: Civil Commitment for Addiction Amid the Overdose Epidemic” appearing in the Cleveland State Law Review.

 

Steven came to Secrest Wardle with a broad range of experience in the mental health arena and excelled as a Law Clerk working on diverse high-value and appellate cases. Mr. Meerschaert is admitted to practice law in the State of Michigan, and he is a member of the State Bar of Michigan’s Young Lawyers, Litigation, Negligence Law, and Health Law sections.
